This misconception has been attributed to the origins of katakana, and, in most cases, it leads to these words not being treated in a special way in textbooks and dictionaries. The final objective of this series of studies is to find out if foreign learners of Japanese are aware of the discrepancies between the meanings of katakana words and the corresponding original English words, also if a mastery of Japanese can promote understanding of those discrepancies and the acquisition of the “correct” meanings of Katakana words.
