In Tokyo dialect such sentences are ambiguous allowing the wh-phrase to have the matrix scope resulting in a whquestion interpretation, as well as the yes-no question interpretation in which the wh-phrase has scope in the complement clause. We consider this problemin terms of the Focus Intonation, by which the wh-phrase bears metrical prominence, with the pitch of the portion to the right being lowered. While Tokyo exhibits the FI, Saga does not.
