We research how he related to the society of his times and how he created an innovative form. Rooted in the turbulent society of 19th century Europe, he attempted a revolution of sculpture and groped towards the possibility of Art. He achieved his aim by linking with the contemporary literature, painting and music of Impressionism and Symbolism, by interacting with the contemporary spirit of Art Nouveau,and by incorporating aspects of oriental culture.\n     Through international exchanges, interactions among various artistic genres, and friendships with other artists, Rodin pursued a reformist view of Nature. In the process, he encountered Japanese Culture. We examine what important artistic value he obtained through contact with traditional Japanese art, and what novel kinds of realist creativity he was able to bring to Japanese artists.\n     In carrying out this study, we demonstrate the diverse interrelations between artistic genres and society, uncover a kind of paradox in Rodin’s creativity, and recognize his unique worth as well as the essential problem of Art.
