The discussion focuses on the three facets of the situation surrounding the Banzuke. First, the period between 1919 and 1928 was an era when the Tokyo kabuki scene was still struggling in the chaos after the Kanto Earthquake. Second, the period conincides with the two hundred-year memorial of Chikamatsu Monzaemon, a prominent playwright in the Edo period.
