The present paper analyzes in two stages the revised Course of Study published by the Japanese government in 2015. The first stage analyzes the Course using the three levels of Austin’s　speech act theory: locutionary acts, illocutionary acts, and perlocutionary acts. The second stage examines the Course using Genda’s perspectives on hope in social sciences, particularly using the concept of hope with regard to occupation. The results of the analyses suggest two main points. The first is that the way in which hope is discussed in the Course of Study reflects the concepts of prioritizing results and pursuing original purposes, both of which have advantages and disadvantages.The Course emphasizes the importance of respecting rules but at the same time it silences “freedom of association.” The second point is that the way in which an individual discusses hope with regard to their occupation includes three elements: possibilities, relationships, and narratives. An individual’s hope is influenced by social factors, the concept of hope is created through relationships with others　and is further reformulated at every stage of an individual’s life.
