In this study, we performed investigations and experiments to examine the physical condition of used clothes. We first collected vendor comments related to the quality of products offered from online used clothing stores, auction sites, and flea market smartphone applications. We also conducted an online survey to investigate the quality sought by buyers of used clothing. The results show that consumers desire used clothing without a highly used or worn feel, referring to both visible changes such as discoloration and non-visible changes such as texture and tactile sensation. From these findings, we attempted to develop a method for quantifying changes in the appearance of used clothing.
