We compare families living abroad for long periods (long-term international resident families) with those who were transferred abroad for work and later returned to Japan (transfer-andreturn families), and analyzed the human networks they formed after moving abroad and the later expansion of these networks.\nMethod: We interviewed four long-term international resident families in August 2016, and four transfer-and-return families in September 2017. Interviews were semi-structured and covered topics including problems encountered after moving abroad and their resolution, human networks formed after returning to Japan (transfer-and-return families), and problems encountered after returning to Japan and their resolution (transfer-and-return families).\nResults: For both long-term international resident families and transfer-and-return families, when a network of other Japanese people was present immediately after they moved abroad, this network functioned effectively to resolve problems related to children’s school life, basic needs such as food, clothing, and housing, and other issues.
