The study compared verbal interactions of mother and infant dyads of children born between 2017-2018 and 1994-1995 (7 pairs each, a total of 14 pairs) by videotaping 30 minutes of free play in their respective homes. The videotaped data was transcribed and the frequency of word utterances (syntactic unit) and units of conversation were counted. A comparison of this data suggests a decline in frequency of joint attention, utterances, urge/agreement 2017-2018 compared to 1994-1995 among 1-year-olds. Overall frequency of utterances was the highest among the mothers of 9-month-olds in 1994-1995. The mothers in 1994-1995 uttered imitation and backchanneling more than other types of utterances while the mothers in 2017-2018 uttered responses the most. The mothers in 1994-1995 employed baby talk in higher frequency than the mothers in 2017-2018.
